it looks interesting but I have a strong aversion of everything that seems pseudointellectual but doesn't actually have anything of substance to say or to show, and don't get me wrong I know how to appreciate art for just being pleasant, but anime has this habit of throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks, and also most of the plots are idiot plots, like evangelion or lain

Haibane Renmei is a very character driven story in a unique and interesting setting that is only there to be appreciated and is never explained. 
The plot revolves around the characters experiencing trauma and then undergoing self-reflection with the help of others in order to overcome their issues.

i get what you mean, but theres stuff out there that just lets the worldbuilding do the storytelling for you, and haibaine renmei is like that
it doesnt really teach you a moral or direct you to a certain way of thinking, make you choose sides, or cause reactionary behavior
you're just shown what the characters did as if it were a retelling of historical events
when it happens like that, it doesnt really matter if the author is trying to push a message
girls last tour is kinda like that aswell
